In 2018 she became cocaptain of the national team. Rapinoe had the chance to score two goals as United States beat Australia 4-3 in the bronze medal match in the Tokyo 2020 Olympics. Japan had been put off from participating in the Olympics until 2021 due the COVID-19 pandemic.
